How this is calculated

Heat demand is floor area × heat use per square foot. The fuel you have to buy is the heat demand divided by your system’s efficiency, multiplied by the price per kWh.

Frequently asked questions

What heat use per square foot is typical?

Mild climates may need 5–8 kWh per sq ft per year, cold northern states 12–18. Older, leaky homes are at the high end.

How do I convert therms to kWh?

One therm is about 29.3 kWh. Divide your price per therm by 29.3 to get the price per kWh.
